Secret societies, hidden passages, and stolen glances across the library. Late nights studying by the fireplace amidst highly suspicious incidents around campus. The key to dark academia is the ambiance.

Whether you’re into the more classical dark academia romance books or are looking for the right backdrop to enjoy a rivalry that has just a dash too much passion to be truly hateful, I have you covered!

From Secret Societies to Star-Crossed Lovers: The Must-Read List Of Dark Academia Romance Books

A Study in Drowning By Ava Reid

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (mild)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

psychological abuse, sexual assault (off-page), mental illness. See full list

"You don’t have to take up a sword. Survival is bravery, too."

- Ava Reid, A Study in Drowning

Effy Sayre is an architecture student obsessed with stories, and one story in particular, Angharad by Emrys Myrddin, has captured her attention for most of her life. When the opportunity to enter a contest to redesign the Myrddin estate comes up, naturally she leaps at it.

Upon arrival, she begins to realize that she has her work cut out for her, especially when she runs into the aggravating Preston Héloury, a fellow student who is threatening to discredit her favorite author’s legacy.

I adored this book and cannot recommend it enough! The imagery throughout this story is impeccable —picture a crumbling house at the edge of the cliff, with rough waves crashing against rocks below. If you listen carefully, the salty air may occasionally carry the legendary sounds of bells ringing from a drowned city. And that’s not the only impossible thing you may see or hear at the Myrddin estate…

Half Truths By Claire Contreras

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

talks of suicide attempts, drug use, violence

"If you were mine, I’d make it so you never had any doubts."

- Claire Contreras, Half Truths

In her final year, Amelia Baston transfers to Ellis University, but completing her degree is the last thing on her mind—she’s here for answers. Her brother, Lincoln, dropped out after a car accident and has never been the same. On top of this, a girl she knew from high school has gone missing from the campus, yet everyone seems fine with moving on.

Amelia is on a mission to find out if these incidents are related in some way to the secret societies that riddle the university. Dodging cloaked figures and a very handsome, arrogant hockey star, Amelia needs to uncover the answers to the question at hand before she becomes the next missing girl.

The more she investigates this tangled web of secrets, the more she finds that it somehow keeps circling back to her family. Luckily, she has Logan, the perfect distraction (and bodyguard).

This book had the perfect amount of intrigue and mystery . While Half Truths is the first in a series, it can be read as a standalone and leaves you with the answers to any of your questions!

Ace of Spades By Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (mild)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Trigger warnings: bullying, violence, homophobia, racism. See full list

"Whispers are like snakes; they slither into your ears and threaten to poison your sanity with their venom."

- Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, Ace of Spades

Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo are students at the prestigious Niveus Academy. At opposite ends of the social hierarchy, they seemingly have nothing in common aside from the same ex-boyfriend and the fact they are two Black students in an overwhelmingly white school.

When they find themselves targeted by Aces, an anonymous gossiper who has both a major grudge and access to the phone numbers of the entire school, Devon and Chiamaka desperately need to work out who Aces is and put a stop to them. With an ever-growing list of suspects, this won’t be easy, but their determination grows as their future college acceptances are on the line.

Ace of Spades explores some heavy themes, largely institutionalized racism, as well as homophobia and classism. I really enjoyed how the main characters in this book were written and fleshed out—their development from start to finish was amazing. Throughout the story, there’s romance, heartbreak, betrayal, and deception. Who’s behind it all? Read Ace of Spades to find out!

Nocticadia By Keri Lake

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 🌶️ (hot)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

Content warning: death, blood, torture, violence. See full list

"Jealousy is a callow schoolboy’s emotion that ends in hard feelings and bloody noses. What I feel for you, Miss Vespertine, would destroy lives."

- Keri Lake, Nocticadia

In Nocticadia, Lilia is accepted into the exclusive Dracadia University, which is sequestered on an island with a disturbing past that haunts it to this day. For Lilia, this is finally a chance to study the disease that took her mother’s life: the Noctisoma.

Dr. Devryck Bramwell, also known as Doctor Death, is just the professor to help her with this, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s extremely easy on the eyes. Unfortunately for Lilia, he seems to take an immediate dislike to her, but this doesn’t stop her from trying to worm her way into becoming his lab assistant.

If a spooky ambiance is a must when you’re choosing a dark academia romance book to reach for, then this is the book for you, but if you’re squeamish, approach this book with some caution!

There are several grim descriptions of autopsies and the wriggling worms that cause the disease. However, it’s part of the chilling atmosphere that really sets this book apart. If you can handle it, you will be rewarded with a moody, intense relationship with a generous helping of spice.

Don’t Let The Forest In By CG Drews

Spice Level: 🌶️ (extra mild)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

blood, gore, violence, body horror, death, eating disorders, homophobia, bullying

"He drew like this because Andrew wrote like this. They fed off each other relentlessly, their fever dreams bleeding through their eyes long after they woke."

- CG Drews, Don’t Let The Forest In

Andrew Perrault, his twin sister Dove, and their best friend Thomas are usually inseparable. Yet when they start their senior year at Wickwood Academy, Dove and Thomas aren’t on speaking terms, and Thomas is acting strange and evasive.

Thomas would often illustrate scenes from the morbid fairytales Arthur enjoys writing. Except even these stories don’t seem to inspire Thomas anymore. In an attempt to find out what’s behind Thomas’ behavior, Andrew decides to follow him into the forest one night, and that’s where he realizes that the monsters in Thomas’s illustrations are no longer confined to the page, and new ones appear every night.

Thomas and Andrew are the only people standing in the way of the monsters going on a full-blown killing spree at school. Andrew would do anything for Thomas, but the monsters are only growing stronger. Just how far will Andrew go to protect Thomas?

Please beware that while I’m recommending this as a dark academia romance, this story is  also classified as a horror. Personally, I thought that would be a deal breaker for me, but I was hooked from the first page. The lyrical writing enchanted me, and few characters love as wholeheartedly as Andrew Perrault. To a fault, sure, but it’s captivating to witness.

Immortal Dark By Tigest Girma

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (mild)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

blood drinking, death, gore, murder. See full list

"The world loves to punish girls who dream in the dark. I plan to worship them."

- Tigest Girma, Immortal Dark

When Kidan Adane joins Uxlay University to uncover information about her missing sister, June, she ends up living with Susenyos Sagad, a vampire who may actually be responsible for both the disappearance of June and the death of her family.

Kidan must save her sister without falling prey to Susenyos. If anyone is up to the task, it’s the rage-fueled and slightly unhinged Kidan.

I loved how richly layered this story was. Despite being a slower burn, it was full of complex relationships, morally grey characters, and a high dose of chaos. The vampire lore, different societies, and house magic system are sure to keep you entertained from beginning to end.

The Temptation of Magic By Megan Scott

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

gore, violence, blood, grief

"And she wondered: if he were a painting, could she read him better?"

- Megan Scott, The Temptation of Magic

Nicole barely knew her mother, but even years after her death, her mother’s legacy is still keeping Nicole safe. Hidden in an art collection, her mother left an important message about The Wake, the government that keeps supernaturals in line—the same one that killed her mother.

Nicole must keep her identity as an Empyreal hidden right under the nose of The Wake’s best hunter, Kyan McCarter. If her identity is discovered, she’ll be his next assignment. It’s a difficult task that is made almost impossible when a painting is stolen and Nicole and Kyan have to team up to find the thief.

From the very beginning, there was so much tension between the main characters in this book, and I loved how they felt this irresistible pull to each other, despite the danger. This added an element of excitement to each interaction, which made it really enjoyable to read. If you love mystery, forbidden romance, and lots of banter, be sure to check this one out.

A Dark and Drowning Tide By Allison Saft

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (medium)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

strangulation, blood, gore, murder, drowning, colonization, racism, antisemitism discussed.

"You've acted the part of a villain so well, you've gone and convinced yourself it's who you truly are."

- Allison Saft, A Dark and Drowning Tide

On an expedition to find a fabled spring that will hopefully advance her career, things quickly take a turn for the worst for Lorelei Kaskel when her mentor is murdered. Isolated as they are, the primary suspects are the five nobles accompanying her.

Each of the nobles has a possible motive, and Lorelei can only rule out one person—Sylvia von Wolff. The two must work together to survive the treacherous journey and find the spring before possibly getting murdered themselves.

Unfortunately, Sylvia and Lorelei have a long history as academic rivals, and they make for reluctant teammates. In cooperating, however, they might just discover that love and hate are two sides of the same coin…

I really loved how Lorelai and Sylvia contrasted each other so well throughout this book, with Lorelai being angry and overall pretty prickly and Sylvia insistently pushing through her defenses. Watching their relationship slowly develop is what made this dark academia romance so enjoyable to read for me.

Curious Tides By Pascale Lacelle

Spice Level: 🌶️ (extra mild)

Content Warnings (may contain spoilers):

grief, anxiety, depression, self-harm, death, murder, torture, drowning.

"Remember not to veer from the path, dreamling."

Pascale Lacelle, Curious Tides

The only survivor of a deadly excursion to the Dovermere sea caves, Emory finds herself with new and unprecedented powers. She has to learn how to control them while battling the grief of having lost her best friend, Romie. Luckily, there is one person she can turn to—Baz, her best friend, and Romie’s brother. He is one of the few people who can truly understand her grief.

When drowned students start washing up on shore alive before dying all over again, Emory and Baz need to figure out what’s going on and whether it has anything to do with a super-secret society hidden at the college.

This book has a really interesting and complex magic system. There are many different powers that are related to the phase of the moon and the tide levels and your powers, as well as when your powers are at their strongest, are determined by their position at the time of your birth.

Hopefully, by now you’ve had your interest piqued by at least a few of these dark academia romance books. When you do pick one up, make sure to set the mood - dim the lights, light a few candles, and don’t mind the cloaked figure in the corner!

Lauren is a South African currently living in the Netherlands and loves picking up new hobbies. At the moment, she is dabbling in bouldering, crochet, padel and barre. When not chaotically switching between these activities, you can usually find her reading romantasy or having yet another cup of coffee.
