It's time to spotlight authors who write Adult Fantasy whose books were included in one of our monthly Adult Fantasy book-only boxes at some point this year (up until September 2024!). Read on to find out more about each author and why our curation team chose to include their book in one of our boxes.

Amy Avery (who has also self-published work as Avery Ames before the release of her debut) is a fantasy writer who resides in Kansas. Apart from writing, she loves playing video games and crafting cocktails.


She mostly writes books inspired by fairytales and folklore, with messy romances and sometimes even a little horror. Her debut novel, The Longest Autumn, was OwlCrate’s January 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Ali Hazelwood

Author Ali Hazelwood

Ali Hazelwood is a New York Times-bestselling Italian author currently residing in the USA. She writes romance novels that mostly focus on women in STEM and other academic fields. She is best known for her debut novel, The Love Hypothesis, which came out in 2021. 


To date, she has written six novels and three novellas. One of her most recent books, Bride, was not only her first paranormal romantasy novel but it was also OwlCrate’s February 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because of the cute found family within the story. Also, the main character Misery is snarky and hilarious without being overly edgy, which adds an element of fun to the book . This book is perfect if you’re looking for something quick to read.

Katherine Arden

Author Katherine Arden

Katherine Arden is an American author who resides in Vermont. In 2020, she won the Vermont Golden Dome Book Award for her horror novel, Small Spaces, which is for middle-grade children. She takes inspiration for her writing from the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robin McKinley, and Dorothy Dunnett, to name a few.


Best known for her debut novel, The Bear and the Nightingale, which was published in 2017, she has written nine books to date. She mainly writes historical fiction and young adult fantasy, and one of her most recent novels, The Warm Hands of Ghosts, was OwlCrate’s March 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because they enjoyed how the two POV’s throughout the book had distinctive voices, and the story was extremely well written. Also, this book was low fantasy, which was something different, and we try to include different books across different genres in each YA box.

Laura R. Samotin

Laura R. Samotin has written two books to date (one of which was written with Ben Alderson). Her book, The Sins on Their Bones, was OwlCrate’s April 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice. She has three upcoming releases, one is the sequel to The Sins on Their Bones (coming in 2025) along with two other books which will be published in 2026.

Our curation team chose this book because they felt like the power dynamics were fanatic, the romances were really strong, and the story was beautifully researched.

S.T. Gibson

S.T. Gibson is an author who resides in Rhode Island with her fiancé and Persian cat. Best known for her novel A Dowry of Blood, she has published six books to date, with her newest book, Savage Blooms, coming in October 2025. Her most recent novel, Evocation, was OwlCrate’s May 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because of the fascinating and heartwarming character dynamics within it. They found them to be complicated, sometimes a little bit messy, but very fun, and loved the polyamorous and queer representation. Overall, all of the characters felt very real, with distinct personalities, goals, and motives.

Genoveva Dimova

Genoveva Dimova is a fantasy author from Bulgaria who currently resides in Scotland with her partner. Her writing often features Balkan folklore and the immigrant experience, and she loves including witches, monsters, and murder in her books. Aside from writing, she enjoys exploring old ruins, climbing hills, and listening to ancient rock music.


To date, she has written three books (all part of The Witch's Compendium of Monsters series), and the first novel in this series, Foul Days, was OwlCrate’s June 2024 Young Adult Fantasy book choice. The sequel, Monstrous Nights, is also an OwlCrate Special Edition.

Our curation team chose this book because it’s perfect for folklore and fairytale lovers! The universe felt like a fun mix of The Witcher meets Studio Ghibli, and they thoroughly enjoyed the amount of research put into Bulgarian folklore creatures. They also felt like the book has one of the most interesting magic systems ever—it feels a little bit urban fantasy but has all the intricacies of something more historical-based.

Sarah Beth Durst

Sarah Beth Durst is a fantasy author from America who writes books for adults, young adults, and middle graders. At present, she resides in New York with her husband and two children, as well as their cat.


To date, she has written twenty-five books and won an American Library Association Alex Award, as well as a Mythopoeic Fantasy Award. Her most recent cozy fantasy release, The Spellshop, was OwlCrate’s July 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because of how adorable it is all around! The romance was sweet, all the mythical creature characters were cool, and Caz was the best sidekick ever.

T. Kingfisher

Ursula Vernon is an award-winning American author who has written books for both young adult and adult readers (writing under her pen name T. Kingfisher for this audience) and she also writes short fiction under both names. 


Best known for her book, Nettle & Bone, she has written twenty-five other books plus a few short story collections. Her stories have also been featured in collections curated by other authors. Her most recent release, A Sorceress Comes to Call, was OwlCrate’s August 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because they enjoyed the relationship between Hester and Richard as well as Cordelia’s character development, which we see throughout the book.

Ava Reid

Ava Reid is a #1 New York Times bestselling American author who resides in California. One of her favorite novels is We Have Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, and in general, she enjoys reading Gothic literaturewhich could be the reason why she mostly writes gothic fantasies across the Young Adult and Adult fantasy genres.


Her debut novel, The Wolf and the Woodsman, was released in 2021. She is best known for her book, A Study in Drowning, OwlCrate’s September 2023 Young Adult Fantasy book choice.


To date, she has written four novels, with two more coming in 2025. Beyond these, she has also published three collections of short stories. Her most recent release, Lady Macbeth, was OwlCrate’s September 2024 Adult Fantasy book choice.

Our curation team chose this book because they loved the numerous references to both Shakespeare and The Lays of Marie de France scattered throughout the book. They felt like it brought another layer of immersion to the story. The solemn, Gothic vibe of the story also made it a very atmospheric read, which they enjoyed.
