5 Horror Anthologies That Will Haunt You For Years to Come

By Frankie Sims

As the 5th most popular genre of literature, horror is quickly becoming more popular than ever before, which means lovers of the genre are always on the hunt for horror books to fill their TBR with!

Lucky for you, I have 5 recommendations for horror anthologies that I love, and I guarantee you will too! Prepare to be haunted…

Dark and twisted horror anthologies

Never Whistle at Night

Featuring over 25 authors, this collection delves into the Indigenous belief that one should never whistle at night as it may summon the spirit of ancient warriors. These stories speak of the evolution of tales born from Native Hawaiians and Native Mexicans, as they feared these spirits would follow any whistler home.

Never Whistle at Night is described as containing “ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge,” which is the perfect mix for anyone seeking a horrifyingly good next read.

Other Terrors

This award-nominated anthology highlights stories from various authors recounting the horrors of living within a society where they are seen as “other” than what is normal. The stories within this collection describe the experience of “others” from different cultures, backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities as they are seen as something to fear—something different and inexplicable.

The twist of these stories comes as the authors explore who in society is truly the “other” and who is just trying to survive. Other Terrors includes work from over 20 contributors, some of whom are well-known horror authors and others who are rising in the genre.

City of Saints and Madmen

This award-winning single-authored anthology follows the enchanting city of Ambergris. At one moment it is a desirable and elegant city, and the next it is a dangerous warzone of the mind. While the root of the issue is unclear, there is a fungus growing in the city as if it were taking over those within it. In Ambergris, citizens are enchanted, some beheaded, while others are lost in the puzzle of ominous mysteries and crime with no end.

City of Saints and Madmen is the first installment of the completed Ambergris trilogy.

We’re Here

This recently published anthology explores the dread and horrors of life from the perspective of the LGBTQ+ community. This collection utilizes fictional beings, death, and psychological fear as the bridge between the horrors described and the truthful pain between every word contributed.

We’re Here is described as an artistic safe space for the authors and LGBTQ+ community to communicate the painful, yet powerful experiences they continue to face each day.

Out There Screaming

Edited by award-winning writer and director Jordan Peele, this horror anthology focuses on Black Horror, highlighting not only supernaturally told experiences but also the injustices and terrors experienced by the Black community in the world today.

Out There Screaming is described as literature that “preys on everything we think we know about our world... and redefines what it means to be afraid.”

In 2023, it was awarded the Bram Stoker Award for Anthology.
