These Are The Most Scary Books Of All Time
The Troop by Nick Cutter
TW (may contain spoiler):
Isolation, Human and Animal Torture, Starvation, Body Horror, Minor Sexual Content, Bugs
The Troop is set on an island off the coast of the Canadian Province of P.E.I. In this book, we follow five teenage boys and their Scout leader who are on a weekend camping trip. It’s a trip they take every year, but now that the boys are getting older, this may be their last.
When a stranger barges into camp seemingly from thin air, tensions rise, and the boys are all on edge. Soon, they find themselves lost in the woods, fighting for survival. With no food, no adults, and no way to communicate with the outside world, madness soon settles in and their true natures take over.
Think Lord of the Flies by William Golding, but much, muuuuuuch worse.
Claw by Katie Berry
TW (may contain spoiler):
Lots of Blood, Body Horror, Death of a Parent, Just Death Everywhere
Claw also takes place in the Canadian wilderness, but this one will take you to the opposite end of the country, in northern British Columbia.... in the dead of winter.
The small town of Lawless gets hit with a massive earthquake that not only rocks the townspeople but also the local wildlife. The aftershocks send many of the predatory animals into a frenzy, and vicious attacks begin to take place at all hours of the day, and no one is safe.
This is one for people who love monster stories and the fear that comes from the unknown
The Only Good Indians by Stephan Graham Jones
TW (may contain spoiler):
Gore, Animal Cruelty and Animal Death, Child Death, Suicide, Alcoholism, Racism
The Only Good Indians follows four American Indigenous men decades after a disturbing event that happened to them as teens.
A hunting trip gone wrong comes back to haunt them, and because of this past indiscretion, an evil entity is hell-bent on revenge. It tracks down each man one by one to torture and discipline him. They don't see it coming until it’s too late.
This story takes on many shapes, just like the entity itself. From a haunted house story to a slasher flick. This is a story of fear that will resonate with you long after you're done reading.
Goddess of Filth by V. Castro
TW (may contain spoiler):
Murder, Rape, Pedophilia, Child Trafficking and Kidnapping, Body Horror, Homophobia
Goddess of Filth is a fast-paced novella with strong female characters. If you love The Craft, this is for you!
In San Antonio, Texas, five girls fresh out of high school are trying anything and everything to follow their dreams of leaving the city. If nothing will work, why not sit in a circle and hold a seance?
What starts as a fun bonding experience between the girls spirals quickly out of control when one of them, Fernanda, starts speaking in an ancient Aztec language.
Weeks of erratic, violent, and aggressive sexual behavior from Fernanda lead the girls through history and tradition to a professor and a priest for help. An exorcism may be the only way to save them all.
Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage
TW (may contain spoiler):
Body Horror, Gaslighting, Forced Institutionalization, Sexual Content, Medical Trauma
Baby Teeth is the creepy kid book everyone needs to read. Told from a dual POV of seven-year-old Hannah and her mother Suzette, we follow the tumultuous relationship between the two.
Hannah’s only goal in life is to torment her mother, and she is succeeding tremendously. Hannah refuses to speak, refuses to go to school, and just generally does whatever she wants whenever she wants with no consequence.
No one believes Suzette when it comes to the horrors she must endure at the hands of her daughter. It’s a battle of wills between mother and child, and Suzette is slowly losing.
Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica |Translated by Sarah Moses
TW (may contain spoiler)
Animal Cruelty and Death, Body Horror, Cannibalism, Rape, Torture, Death of a Parent
Tender is the Flesh is a morbid look at our near future. This is a horror dystopia that will leave you upset, disgusted, and second-guessing where your food comes from.
After an infectious virus kills all of Earth's animals, a new source of meat needs to be found. We follow Marcos through his mundane life, working as a butcher at the 'special meat’ processing plant. This new meat is all the rage.
Marcos disassociates from his work because he can’t handle the truth, but he soon finds himself in possession of his own specimen. Boundaries are quickly crossed despite the promise of death if caught by authorities.
This is a story that blurs the lines between what is a monster and what is a man.
