The story continues...
Chapter 26:
Myra struggles to Old Sawthorne to take refuge from the storm under an awning, and to her surprise is soon joined by Ameline. Ameline warns her to stay away from August. Myra takes her leave and finds she’s being pursued by someone and starts to run. Soon the forger Vincent comes across her path and he invites her into his cab, which she eventually agrees to. Having an idea, Myra tells Vincent that she will paint his portrait for enough money to get herself and Lucy to safety. He agrees, and dropping her off at home says she can start the next morning.
Chapter 27:
Back in her apartment Myra promises Ava she will be paid by the end of next week, leaving her alone with Lucy.
Myra arrives the next day to paint Vincent’s portrait, and he’s kinder than she expected. Vincent shows her a newspaper with the headline that Will died of influenza and he reveals that the documents he forged for the Governor were autopsy papers. On the back of the paper is a photo of August and Felicity.
Chapter 28:
Vincent invites Myra to attend a charity gala with him, but she isn’t aware until they arrive that it is hosted by Governor Harris, and they are seated at a table with the Harris family, August and Felicity included. The Governor tells them that Nigel has been missing for days. After the meal, Myra needs some air and goes to freshen up, and when she reenters the gala August is giving a speech, but is struggling. Myra catches his eye and mouths for him to keep looking at her, and with that contact he is able to make it through.
Chapter 29:
Myra retreats to a balcony and is soon joined by August. They argue, but August eventually makes Myra see why he acts the way he does. He also admits he did ask his father for money for Lucy, but he was shot down, so instead he sold his special gold pen, giving the coins to Myra. He tells Myra that given a choice he would pick her over Felicity. They are about to kiss when they are interrupted by Vincent.
Chapter 30:
Vincent asks Myra if she’d like to take a walk through the gardens and outside he takes her to a pond which is a landscape he had her mother paint for him. He warns her that he has heard that August has a temper. They decide to call it a night and Vincent leaves Myra in his cab as he fetches his lighter, but before he can return someone rips Vincent’s driver from his seat and takes off with Myra in tow. She leaps from the cab, hitting the ground hard, and runs. Eventually caught, a knife at her back cutting her, and just as she sees Vincent running up to help her head is slammed into the curb, everything going black.
Chapter 31:
Myra comes to under a stoop with Vincent. He wasn’t able to get a look at her attacker while they fled. He helps get her back home to her sister and it is clear Vincent wants something more from her, but Myra can’t stop thinking about August. He bids her goodnight.
