Amber and I are BACK this September for a fun new readalong! We're about to start our monthly discussion for our August YA book, Omen Of Ice by Jus Accardo!
As a reminder, from now on, our monthly discussions will be both here on the OwlCrate blog AND on The Nest! Go check out Amber's discussion that will be full of fun extras like bookish charades, shelf scavenger hunts and coloring pages!
On each day we'll read a section of Omen Of Ice, both on the blog and in The Nest's group, and then discuss in the comments our theories and predictions. This means there will be spoilers for each section! Beware!
Just a reminder that this will be a SPOILER discussion for chapters 11-15 of Omen Of Ice, so make sure you read or are finished this section before continuing.
I'm usually good at figuring out plot and motivations but at this point the only thing I'm sure of is that Valen will probably rage howl at random again...
Chapter Eleven (Keltania):
Valen and Kel travel from the village and argue about what can be done about the Fae villagers. They are attacked with arrows from four large fae who are upset that Valen has refused to help the village.
The group argues and then attacks Valen. Keltania hurls her sword but it's embedded in a tree so Valen uses his ice magic. One of the fae meets Keltania in combat and she bests him but Valen is hurt, he's been stabbed and is bleeding...and Keltania has the same wound alongside him.
They ride hard back to the castle to get her help.
(Can we talk about how he calls her TANIA?! Please tell me in the comments that you too have been shortening her name to Kel)
Chapter Twelve (Valen):
Valen and Kel travel back to the castle and talk about their connection. Valen goes down into the tunnels under the estate looking for wine (mood) and thinking about his grandfather's love of bondage. He finds a door at the end of a hall thrumming with power and after trying to unlock it thirty-seven times, he simply asks it politely to open and it does.
Inside he finds nothing except a slab of granite (checks out for bondage, really) with two small objects on it. The walls are lined with ice and there's druid magic. One of the objects is a pearlescent flask and one is a teardrop vial. Just then Liani comes in and Valen asks her why they've stolen the last drop of druid magic that was supposed to be destroyed.
Liani explains that druid power cannot be depleted and that they keep it for Valen's safety. Valen tells her that he can't keep this from his Aphelian. Liani warns against it and threatens to kill her if necessary.
Chapter Thirteen (Keltania):
Valen has wrapped Keltania's injuries and she's training in the courtyard. Kopic comes to see her asking after Valen who has gone to bed.
Keltania and Kopic discuss the druid's residual magic and then they see Liani who asks Keltania about her wound and discusses Valen's security. Keltania starts to feel unwell and after speaking with Liani goes to Valen who is drinking, and it's affecting her like their shared wounds did.
Valen and Keltania are...drunk. She leaves him.
(that's Valen)
Chapter Fourteen (Valen):
The next day Valen trains with Buri but finds it difficult to perform. They argue and Buri thinks that the human is distracting him. Buri insults Keltania and Valen defends her. Keltania tells him that they will have to find a way to fix their bond.
The next morning Kopic takes some of Valen's power through a process called panashere and tries to reassure him of what he found out in the cellar. Valen asks him not to, as he's drained but it's done anyway. It's incredibly painful so he thinks of his bond with Kel and the pain she will feel. Valen freezes the needle and Keltania stumbles in.
They pass out together.
Chapter Fifteen (Keltania):
Keltania learns that Valen goes through the panashere and vows to fix their bond by reaching out to her druid leader, Levina.
Keltania receives word from Levina in two weeks and waits for Valen in his rooms. Valen and Kopic enter with a rare black rabbit that Kopic has caught. They put the rabbit down and Valen and Keltania talk about Levina.
Levina believes that she can fix this but must meet them in a place called Ventin Peaks, which will take two weeks.
They discuss how to make the journey and Valen decides to tell his uncle the truth. They tell Orbik and he says to wait for Levina's missive and ushers them out of the room. Keltania is by herself when she realizes that she may have made a mistake with Valen's sigil when the door bursts open. Valen is in the hallway and they have to flee.
Not sure what's going on still...but that Liani can take a hike.
Questions:
-
🤕Do you think Keltania is in over her head protecting Valen?
-
✨💫I am beginning to doubt the “residual magic” line everyone keeps touting. What are your thoughts?
-
🗺Do you think it's a good idea for them to go on this journey?
