Time for another "Whatcha Reading?" Team OwlCrate Edition. If there’s one thing book lovers love more than actually reading books, it’s gushing about their favorite reads (and convincing you to read them!)
Every month members of our team love to share their personal favorite books of the month! We are a diverse team of readers, so if you’re looking for your next five star book, read on dear readers and check back next month for another installment!
Cade
Crueler Mercies by Maren Chase
After nearly a month-long reading slump, I started an eARC of this one and couldn’t put it down. It’s everything I didn’t know that I needed right now and will for sure be in my favorite reads of the year.
Feminist rage, sapphic romance, a princess locked in a tower, political intrigue, and even some magic! It was perfect, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
CORI
The Hysterical Girls of St. Bernadette's by Hanna Alkaf
I never get sick of Dark Academia, but even so, The Hysterical Girl's of St. Bernadette's was a breath of fresh air in the genre.
St. Bernadette's is a prestigious all-girls school in Malaysia, but when a mysterious screaming sickness takes over the school, past trauma, and long-held secrets are brought to the surface.
Is it supernatural? A disease? Hanna Alkaf does a fantastic job keeping you on your toes while also exploring what it means to have a voice in a world that might prefer you to be silent.
The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee
I'm doing a blanket recommendation for the entire Green Bone Saga trilogy this month, although in reality I only read the final book, Jade Legacy. I obviously can't tell you what happens in that one!
The trilogy follows two rival clans in their struggle for dominance in the island nation of Kekon. Kekon is special—it's the only place in the world that produces Jade, which Green Bones can wear to grant themselves great power.
Although only three books long, this trilogy truly builds these characters to be fleshed-out and complicated people who don't always make the right decisions, and in fact, they often made me want to yell. I cried, I fumed, and I kicked my feet with joy sometimes too. This is the strongest beginning-to-end trilogy I've read in a long time.
ASHLEY
One of Us Is Dead by Jeneva Rose
The Real Housewives but make it Murder Mystery. This is one of the most entertaining audiobooks I have ever listened to (while following along), and it was such a fun experience. I laughed so much, and I was so shocked at the ending! I’d say this is like reality TV made into a fun, light murder mystery.
Lost and Lassoed by Lyla Sage
Who doesn’t love a small-town romance where the main characters absolutely hate each other? This was my favorite book in the series, by far! Not only was it super funny but also extremely emotional.
The female main character (Teddy) is one of my favorite fictional characters ever! She’s fierce and strong-willed but also shares the message that even though on the outside everything seems to be okay, sometimes things just aren’t.
Amber
Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister
Desert Creatures gave me such Mad Max vibes. Magdala’s life has been hard. Along with her father, she was exiled at nine and put out into the desert.
Together they joined some survivors on a pilgrimage to Las Vegas. The vigilante saints are supposed to reside there and heal the sick and wounded. Magdala has club foot and develops desert sickness. Soon all the other survivors fall to sickness or some other death, and Magdala is left to survive on her own.
I loved the story, and I could not stop reading it because of how weird and crazy it was. The ending was just perfect.
The C*ck Down the Block by Amy Award
I adore this series so much! The chickens are everything! I do love the friends-to-lovers and fake dating tropes, and I especially loved how sex- and body-positive this book is.
Trixie has her high school reunion to go to and her bully to face. She gets the bright idea to ask her hot football player neighbor to be her fake boyfriend for the party. Little did they know that soon they would fall madly in love.
Trixie was so sweet and such a strong character, and Chris was her hot protector. I loved their banter. The romance was sweet, and boy was it spicy. I cannot wait to read the next one.
A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
T. Kingfisher is an auto-buy author for me. I will read it all. In A Sorceress Comes to Call we follow Cordelia, who has lived under the control of her mother her whole life. Her mother is a sorcerer and uses her power to make Cordelia obedient by controlling her body and mouth.
After a suspicious death in the town, her mother makes them leave in the dead of night. Soon they arrive at the manor of a squire that her mother intends to marry.
This story was so immersive, and I did not want to put it down. Hester and Cordelia were my favorites! I loved this book so much!
