The story continues...
Chapter 20:
When Winnie arrives home her mom is upset that Jay called, and upset that now everyone is acting like they haven’t been treated so terribly over the past four years. Winnie assures her that Jay is just helping her, she hasn’t taken him back as a friend. Her mom drives her to meet him at the Friday estate.
Chapter 21:
Jay takes her to train in the forest away from the other Fridays. He acts as the nightmare, coming for her again and again until Winnie eventually is able to get her bow pointed at him quick enough. He acts strange when it finally happens. Jay offers to show her where to hide in the forest for the next trial, a place where nightmares won’t go. They end their training with a run.
Jay offers to take her home on his motorcycle, and after much cajoling, Winnie finally agrees to get on.
Chapter 22:
After dropping her off Jay agrees to meet again the following day before the trial. To Winnie’s surprise, Aunt Rachel comes to the house and sort of rambly apologizes for the years that Winnie and her family have stuck by the Luminaries even when they were treated so poorly. As she goes to leave she also notices Winnie’s locket and it clearly scares her.
Later that evening Winnie goes to her brother’s place for dinner and he explains that he found the locket in their attic, but their mom didn’t know who it belonged to.
Chapter 23:
As Winnie waits for her mom to finish work outside the Revenant’s Daughter, she decides to go to Joe Squared, a café where Jay and his band are playing. She finds looking at him enthralling, and it reminds her of what she lost four years ago. All of a sudden Jay spots her in the crowd, and feeling trapped, Winnie flees.
Aunt Rachel brings Winnie to the Wednesday estate - her first time returning in four years. She gets outfitted with the best hunting gear there is.
Questions:
- How do you think the second trial is going to go for Winnie?
- Why do you think everyone has so immediately welcomed Winnie's family back after four years of being ostracized?
- Why do you think Aunt Rachel was so freaked about by Winnie's locket?
