“There is love in me the likes of which you've never seen. There is rage in me the likes of which should never escape. If I am not satisfied in the one, I will indulge the other.”

Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, shows us that just because a scientist can create something doesn’t necessarily mean the scientist should. Victor Frankenstein creates a sentient being, but when he’s scared by it, the creator doesn’t stick around to ensure his creation learns how to live in society and be good and kind or be loved and supported. Instead, Frankenstein’s monster is left to fend for himself and slowly becomes lonely and angry. The effects of this choice are felt throughout the rest of this book, where Mary uses words wisely to connect with her audience.

Marissa Meyer

Author Marissa Meyer

For a more modern famous science fiction author, let’s introduce Marissa Meyer. A Washington State native and an alumnus of Pacific Lutheran University, this New York Times #1 Best-Selling author took fairy tales we all know and developed a world in which to get lost. Marissa included the famous tales of Cinderella and Snow White and turned these stories into refreshing science fiction novels in the Lunar Chronicles, which draw you in and give you a book hangover.

What if Cinderella had robotic parts that made her a second-class citizen in a version of Beijing far into the future? Meet Cinder, a young woman just trying to survive each day under the roof of a stepmother who resents her for existing. Cinder’s life turns upside down when secrets are revealed, and we see the bravery we’d recognize in any version of Cinderella, a bravery we feel deep in our soul that we want to see in ourselves.

Marissa builds a world we recognize while offering an entirely new world that carries across the rest of the series. The Lunar Chronicles also includes Scarlet, a version of Little Red Riding Hood; Cress, a version of Rapunzel; and finally Winter, a version of Snow White.

The best part about Women’s History Month is that it celebrates all women. While these eight authors are well-known and famous, there are so many other female authors waiting for you to give them a chance. So curl up, get comfy, and pull out a book written by a female author you love in the month of March and beyond!

Frawst found the best way to process her feelings growing up was through poetry, which is why she double majored in History and English with a Creative Writing Emphasis. Writing allowed her to play with words in various orders and rhythms to express her feelings, which started in high school. When she's not reading these days, she enjoys text-based role-playing games, which, while not poetry, still allows her to write almost every day.

Last year involved her reading all over the spectrum, including The 1619 Project, The Raven Boys Cycle, Nikita Gill, and a lot of dark fantasy. You can find her in Canada, usually with her nose in a book or headphones on while she writes and codes in game or gazes dreamily at the nature which surrounds her house.
