The story continues...

Chapter 36:
Jonah wants Addie to take his place on the island, claiming he’ll leave and recruit people to come take her place in a year. He also tells her that if she takes his place the island will let Violet go.

Chapter 37:
Eulalie tricked Jonah into taking her place, and Jonah in turn has tried to trick countless people over the years to taking his. They all have died. The island needs to want them. When he tried to get Lenora to take his place she got stuck in the tunnels, blocked by Violet’s body. Both girls died that day. And it is he and the island that make Violet fade away at night so that Lenora cannot find her.

Chapter 38:
Addies heads to the lighthouse, and through a typed conversation tells Billy her plan. She wants to try to trick the island into letting Lenora and Violet go by perhaps interrupting the process in the middle of taking her. She just needs to figure out how.

Chapter 39:
Back at the villa Addie goes through Roland’s papers of the caves. On one there is a drawing of an anatomical heart, and the next what looks to be a circulatory system.

Chapter 40:
Addie wakes again in the forest having sleep walked. She heads to the Wells house where she hears Lenora playing her harp. Lenora tells her that she wasn’t pushed into the heart, she jumped voluntarily. Addie promises to let the island take her so Violet can be free which will allow Lenora to stop hanging on in search of her sister. The promise is a lie, but Addie is starting to put the puzzle pieces together - she wonders if she can stop the island’s heart from beating, just like her heart once stopped.

Chapter 41:
The next morning Addie plans to explore to cenote to find any tunnels she may be able to block the water running through, but as she steps outside a helicopter lands on the beach, loading up David on a stretcher. Apparently he collapsed so they are taking him to the hospital, Melinda and Ken following in a motor boat. Sean tells Addie he hasn’t seen his brother all day, and he isn’t responding to the walkie talkie.

Chapter 42:
Violet finds Addie and takes her to Jonah’s treehouse. There seems to be no one there, but Addie finds a stack of drawings of herself in various moments she’s been on the island. There is what looks like a body under a tarp, but when she pulls it away it is instead a statue of herself.

 Questions:

  1. Why do you think there is a statue of Addie? Do you think it has a purpose?
  2. What do you think happened to Billy?
  3. Do you think Addie’s plan to stop the heart of the island will work?
  4. What are your predictions about the last section of the book?
