The story concludes...

Chapter 43:
Jonah appears behind Addie. He gives her a choice: find Billy in 30 minutes or Jonah will kill Billy if she doesn’t jump into the heart of the island.

Chapter 44:
Addie starts to run towards the cenote, but gets stuck in mud on the way, her time ticking down quickly. When she eventually jumps in the water she has less than 5 minutes to find Billy.

Chapter 45:
Addie makes it to the Cathedral with a minute left, seeing her statue behind the altar with Eulalie now. Her time is up.

Chapter 46:
Addie arrives at the heart of the island five minutes late, but she has devised a new plan. Billy is there, okay for now. Addie takes his backpack and jumps in.

Chapter 47:
Using what is in Billy’s backpack and Lenora’s knife, Addie plugs one of the holes with her body, holding her breath until the island’s heartbeat slowly stops. She loses consciousness.

Chapter 48:
Addie wakes in a cave that seems to be the island’s lungs. Billy pulls her out with a rope and a golf cart. Apparently when the heart stopped Jonah collapsed, but he then sat up and helped Billy from the caves, dashing off to the east side of the island. Violet is no longer in her body, appearing more ghost like now, and they go in search of Lenora.

Chapter 49:
The island seems to be dying around them, smelling like rot and death. Violet finds a ghostly Lenora in the woods, and together they move on.

Chapter 50:
The island is angry, and Billy and Addie flee back towards the lighthouse. The ocean seems to be encroaching on the island. They find Sean and Jonah trying to get the catamaran running, but Jonah tells Addie the island will never let them both leave. He tries to force her into one of the sinkholes, but in the struggle Addie ends up forcing him in instead. Sean, Addie and Billy leave the island behind.

Chapter 51:
Addie and Billy are hanging out on the beach in Miami six months later. Addie has healed, and the island was declared a disaster zone. Ken got a job at one of David’s hotels, so they live nearby.

Epilogue:
Eulalie felt everything that happened to the island, and died and came back to life along with it. She returned to the island to start healing it, and found Jonah there. She let him leave, where he returned to England to visit the grave of his betrothed. The man who escorted him reported that he found only bones on the grave later. Eulalie is happy on the thriving island that has been returned to nature.

 Questions:

  1. The end! Most important question: did you enjoy the book?
  2. What do you think would have happened to Addie had she been forced to stay on the island?
  3. The Depths is a standalone - would you like to revisit Eulalie and the island in the future?
  4. If you got stranded on an uninhabited island, which one book would you like to have with you?
